A male patient, 24 years old, has been suffering from discharge from the lower back side near the joint of both hips for the last year.
He visited AIIMS Bhopal with his parents four months ago in surgical oncology OPD, and after a thorough investigation, he was found to have growth in the sacral area. He had given a history of surgery for the same problem ten years ago somewhere in our hospital in Madhya Pradesh, but he developed the same problem in the last four months.
Again. After understanding the nature of the disease, Dr Neelesh Shrivastava, assistant professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology, decided to proceed with the excision of the tumour.
The patient's surgery was challenging given the difficulty as it was near the nerves, which generally control the bladder and bowel functions as well as the sexual functions.
A team was made with the collaboration of surgical oncology, plastic surgery, and neurosurgery; Dr Harish Kumar, assistant professor of anaesthesia, took the lead for anaesthesia and surgery was carried out by the team, including Dr. Neelesh Shrivastava from surgical oncology and Dr Sumit Raj from neurosurgery, for primary resection of the tumour and preservation of necessary nerves, reconstruction part was dealt with by plastic surgery by Dr. . Deepak Krishna.
The patient was doing well post-surgery and planned for discharge on day 13; there was no postoperative complication in the form of nerve damage, which can affect the general routine of the patient, like urination, defecation, etc. The patient is now stable and has been discharged in stable condition.
This is to notify you that this case is unique, as in recurrence cases, there is a high chance of getting nerve injuries to the area where the tumour was, and if it happens, the patient will experience dysfunction of bladder and bowel habits. that the Department of Surgical Oncology is doing such complicated cases on a routine basis.
This is an example of complicated care provided by teamwork for challenging cases in AIIMS Bhopal. AIIMS Director Prof. Dr. Ajay Singh has congratulated the medical team for this achievement.
