Suicide by two brothers in Agra

Thursday, 27 June 2024 | PNS | Lucknow

After Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of suicide by two brothers in Agra, the local officials finally swung into action and on Tuesday night they arrested accused Sub-Inspector Hariom Agnihotri and sent him to jail after taking legal action against him on Wednesday morning.

Another accused inspector of Sadabad police station, Mukesh Kumar, who was placed under suspension by Superintendent of Police of Hathras, Nipun Agarwal, is still at large. In Kumar’s place, Crime Inspector Naresh Singh posted at Kotwali Hathras Junction has been made the in-charge inspector.

Earlier, Sub-Inspector Hariom Agnihotri was also suspended.

Additional Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Singh is investigating the case. Police have been deployed in the area to maintain peace and order.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State Prof SP Singh Baghel also reached Agra and consoled the family of the victims. He instructed the police to send the accused inspector to jail with immediate effect. Along with this, he reprimanded the tehsildar and sub-divisional magistrate and directed them to initiate proceedings of allotment of land on lease to the family. Baghel also met the victims’ family and gave them cheques of Rs 5 lakh each and also assured them of a government job to the son of deceased Home Guard Pramod after he becomes an adult after 20 days.

It is noteworthy that a teenage girl from the town was lured and taken away by a youth from another community on May 22. After the teenager left, her brother-in-law and sister, residents of the town, left their house and went somewhere else. On the complaint given by the girl’s father, the police registered a named case against the accused and his sister on May 25/26. In connection with the same case, the Sadabad police took the accused’s second brother-in-law, Sanjay Singh of village Roopdhanu under Bahran Agra police station, into custody and questioned him.

After this, Sanjay’s elder brother Pramod and his son were questioned. They were released after questioning. Eleven days later, Sanjay committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in the village last Friday. About 72 hours later, Pramod also committed suicide by hanging himself from the same tree on Monday morning.

After Sanjay’s suicide, his brother Pramod accused the police of harassing him and taking Rs 50,000 for releasing him. The superintendent of police suspended the then Saadabad police inspector Mukesh Kumar and got a case registered against them after the local residents and the family members staged a huge demonstration after keeping the body on road and demanded action against the cops.

Later Chief Minister Yogi Aditiyanath also took cognisance of the matter and asked the DGP to take stern action against the guilty cops and also to provide compensation to the victims’ family.
