LG inspects clogged drains, orders desilting on war footing

Sunday, 30 June 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

A day after the national capital came to standstill due to heavy rains resulting in water logging at multiple locations, Delhi Lt Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena on Saturday inspected some of the most severely affected drains.  He directed concerned agencies to carry out desilting of drains on a war footing.

On Friday, he had issued instructions to officials to deal with the flooding in Delhi that occurred due to heavy rainfall and backflow from the choked drains.

Giving details of his on the spot inspection, officials said Saxena visited Taimur Nagar, Barapulla Drain, ITPO, TilakBridge, KushakNallah, Golf Links and Bharti Nagar.

He directed the agencies to make the water drainage system fool-proof so as to avert the recurrence of such incidents in future.

Saxena expressed displeasure that none of the major drains were desilted and cleaned in run up to the monsoon preparations and this essentially led to heavy water logging with several parts of the city getting inundated in chest-deep water. He also noticed encroachment along the drains and asked the officials to remove them immediately.

The LG, accompanied by Chief Secretary cum Chairman NDMC, Commissioner MCD, Principal Secretary PWD and other senior officials, first inspected Taimur Nagar Drain, where large parts of areas in Okhla, Taimur Nagar, ShaheenBagh, Jasola, Bharat Nagar, Jamia Nagar and the neighbouring posh colonies like New Friends Colony, Maharani Bagh and others getting flooded on Friday. Taimur Nagar drain owned by MCD was heavily choked by a huge quantity of silt and garbage deposit that prevented the water from flowing down.
