With the outbreak of severe heat conditions prevailing across most of the districts in the State, the School Education and Literacy Department has issued a new directive on June 11 stating all schools from KG to standard 12 to remain closed till June 15. The order has been issued by Nandkishore Lal, Joint Secretary Education Department.

As per the fresh set of instructions, classes in all categories of schools- government, non- government aided, unaided, minority and private institutions are to remain suspended from June 12 to June 15. After the said, date, schools can operate at their pre- determined time. The notice also stated that private schools will be operated under the RTI Act and management in accordance with the guidelines of the respective school. The order has been implemented with immediate effect.

It is worth noting that the Department had earlier directed the schools across Jharkhand to conduct classes from 7 am to 11: 30 am for all classes from KG to class 12.till June 15.

The Meteorological Department Ranchi has also issued a red alert depicting severe heat wave for June 12 and June 13 for Garwah, Palamu, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela- Kharsawan. An orange warning stating severe heat wave has been issued for Latehar and Chatra. Ranchi, Koderma, Giridih, Hazaribagh, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Lohardaga, Ramgarh, Gumla and Khunti will also experience heat wave conditions.

“The temperature is likely to remain the same in the coming few days. Some places in east Jharkhand and adjoining areas might witness light rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and lighting during the second half of the day on June 13 and June 14. With heat wave alerts being issued, residents are also advised to stay indoors and to step out only if necessary. It is advised to stay hydrated and also take precautionary measures especially for the elderly and children to protect  from the heat wave prevailing in most parts of Jharkhand,” said Director MET Centre, Ranchi Abhishek Anand.

With the Meteorological Department predicting a severe heat wave for the next four days, Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal has issued a pressing appeal to the residents of East Singhbhum. The forecast indicates that temperatures are set to soar, creating potentially hazardous conditions for health and wellbeing. In response, Mittal has laid out a series of precautions aimed at minimizing the risks associated with extreme heat.

Mittal emphasized the importance of simple yet effective measures to combat the scorching heat. "During the peak heat hours, from 12 PM to 3 PM, it is crucial to avoid physical exertion. Staying indoors during this period can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses."

Mittal also highlighted the need to protect vulnerable groups, particularly children, from the harsh sun. "Children are more susceptible to heat stroke. It is important to ensure they stay in shaded areas and are given plenty of fluids. If symptoms of heat-related illnesses persist despite home remedies, seek medical attention immediately. Recognising the symptoms early and taking prompt action can prevent these serious outcomes.”

To support the community during this heat wave, the district health centers are well-stocked with ORS powder and other essential medicines. "These supplies are crucial for treating dehydration and other heat-related conditions," Mittal noted.

The District Magistrate's message is clear: the coming days will test the resilience of East Singhbhum's residents, but with the right precautions and community support, the challenges of the heat wave can be effectively managed.
