Ruckus in MCD over Mayor arriving late in House

Thursday, 22 August 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House on Wednesday witnessed a ruckus as Opposition Councillors started protesting against Mayor Shelly Oberoi for arriving late and causing a delay in the proceedings following which Oberoi suspended four BJP Councillors.

Heavy sloganeering ensued in the House after Oberoi arrived, but the meeting was adjourned soon after for 15 minutes. BJP and Congress councillors stormed into the Well of the House, raising slogans against Oberoi and the AAP-led MCD and holding placards with ‘Mayor sahiba jawab do! Jawab do!’ and ‘Constitute a standing committee’ written on them. They also raised slogans like, ‘Mayor Haye, Haye’ and “Corrupt Mayor Shame On You”, and demanded her resignation.

The House was adjourned for a second time for 30 minutes as the protest continued. Moreover, the mayor suspended BJP councillors Pankaj Luthra from Jhilmil ward, Gajendra Singh Dalal from Mundka and Amit Nagpal from Pitampura.

The meeting began more than 50 minutes late from its scheduled time at 2 pm and was adjourned at 2.55 pm for 15 minutes due to the protests. Before the commencement of the meeting, BJP councillors staged a protest outside the meeting hall. They raised slogans over issues, including the pending appointment of a Dalit mayor to the MCD, delay in clearing garbage, waterlogging and the standing committee’s formation.

Leader of Opposition and former Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Raja Iqbal Singh launched a sharp attack on the AAP government in the corporation over the issue of severe waterlogging in Delhi. “The government machinery of Delhi came into action only after the intervention of the Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, otherwise Delhi’s PWD Minister Atishi had left no stone unturned to drown the city,” Singh stated. There was heavy deployment of police personnel at the civic body office.

He added that the AAP government in the MCD has wreaked havoc in the city and after Minto Bridge underpass, there is waterlogging in Zakhira as well. “PWD Minister Atishi only realised the need to write to the Railway Department to construct drains and culverts after the waterlogging occurred. Reacting after a crisis is a hallmark of AAP’s way of functioning and due to their incompetence, the people of Delhi are suffering severely from waterlogging,” the LoP said.
