Rise in water levels of Kharkai and Swarnarekha Rivers in Jamshedpur

Monday, 05 August 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

Amidst heavy rainfall in the region, the water levels of the Kharkai and Swarnarekha rivers in Jamshedpur have been rising steadily, nearing their respective danger marks. Authorities have issued a public appeal urging residents to stay away from the coastal and submerged areas of both rivers to ensure safety.

The Swarnarekha River, which courses through Jamshedpur, has shown a significant rise in its water level. As of the latest measurement at the Mango Bridge site, the river stands at 116.58 meters, which is just 4.92 meters below the designated danger level of 121.50 meters. The rapid rise is a cause for concern, especially for the communities living in the low-lying areas along the riverbanks.

Similarly, the Kharkai River is witnessing an alarming increase in its water level. Recorded at 126.830 meters at the Adityapur Bridge site, the river is now only 2.17 meters short of the danger level of 129.00 meters. This situation poses a significant threat to the areas surrounding the river, particularly those situated at lower elevations.

Given the precarious rise in water levels, local authorities have intensified their efforts to monitor the situation closely. The district administration, in collaboration with disaster management teams, is on high alert, preparing for any potential emergencies that may arise due to further rainfall or unexpected surges in river levels.

“ Residents are strongly advised to avoid venturing into coastal or submerged areas near both rivers. People living in vulnerable areas should remain alert and be prepared to evacuate if necessary. The administration has set up emergency helplines and temporary shelters for those who may need to relocate,” said an official.

The Kharkai and Swarnarekha rivers have a history of swelling during the monsoon season, leading to flooding that disrupts lives and livelihoods in Jamshedpur. Previous incidents have caused significant damage to property, infrastructure, and agricultural lands, highlighting the critical need for vigilance during this period.

The rising water levels of the Kharkai and Swarnarekha rivers demand immediate attention and action from both the authorities and the general public. By adhering to safety advisories and remaining vigilant, the community can mitigate the risks posed by the swelling rivers. Continuous monitoring and proactive measures are essential to ensure the safety and well-being of Jamshedpur's residents as the monsoon season progresses.
