Punjab Tehsildars Call Off Strike after Talks with Revenue Minister

Monday, 19 August 2024 | PNS | Chandigarh

Punjab’s Tehsildars (revenue officers) have decided to call off their planned strike following a crucial meeting with the state Revenue Minister Bram Shankar Jimpa on Sunday. The decision came after intense discussions between the Cabinet Minister and leaders of the Tehsildar Union, where it was agreed that the Tehsildars’ legitimate demands would be addressed, ensuring the smooth continuation of their work without disruption.

The Tehsildars had initially planned to go on strike from August 19 to 21, citing unresolved issues that had yet to be addressed by the authorities, including concerns over operational inefficiencies and the need for more robust support within the Revenue Department. As news of the impending strike emerged, it prompted an immediate response from Minister Jimpa, who recognized the potential impact on the state's revenue services and quickly convened a meeting to resolve the situation.

During the meeting, held in Chandigarh, the Minister acknowledged the critical role of the Revenue Department in Punjab’s administration and expressed the government's commitment to addressing the concerns of its officers. He assured the union leaders that their demands, particularly those related to workplace safety and operational efficiency, would be given due consideration and resolved promptly.

The Minister also admitted that there had been a delay in issuing the official communication following the Punjab Revenue Officer Union’s meeting held on August 16-17. This delay, he noted, had created a communication gap, leading to unrest among the officers. However, he assured that the necessary documents would be issued soon and that all pending issues would be addressed with priority.

The Revenue Minister, along with Financial Commissioner, Revenue, (FCR) KAP Sinha, emphasized the importance of maintaining a functional and efficient revenue system, especially in light of its significance to the state’s overall governance. Minister Jimpa reiterated the commitment of the Punjab government to sympathetically consider and resolve the genuine demands of the revenue officers.

Following the meeting, the Tehsildar Union expressed satisfaction with the assurances provided and decided to withdraw their strike. They emphasized that while their demands are important, they also recognize the critical nature of their work and the potential inconvenience to the public that a strike could cause. The Tehsildars confirmed that they would continue their duties as usual, ensuring that all administrative functions proceed without any hindrance.
