Punjab Sports Dept to launch comprehensive athlete directory

Saturday, 03 August 2024 | Monika Malik | Chandigarh

To revolutionize the sports management, Punjab Sports Department has decided to create an extensive players’ directory. The initiative aimed at streamlining player registrations, document achievements, and simplify applications for cash awards. The directory is set to play a pivotal role in various departmental schemes, marking a significant step towards enhancing the sporting landscape in Punjab.

The Sports Department has issued a significant letter to the School Education secretary detailing plans to create an extensive directory of athletes. The primary focus of the initiative is to compile a detailed directory of players across Punjab.

A senior official told The Pioneer that the directory will serve multiple purposes like player registration, tournament records, their achievements, cash award applications, and also event registration for ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan’.

The official said that such directory will help in maintaining a central database for registering athletes across the State, where comprehensive records of tournaments they are participating in would be maintained. It will also help in documenting the players’ accomplishments and milestones, besides simplifying the application process for cash awards or grants.

In addition, the director will also facilitate easy registration for events during the ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan’ sports festival. “That is not all! The Department is also planning to initiate player grading through this portal, further enhancing the management and recognition of athletic talent,” added the official.

This year’s ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan-2024’ is scheduled to begin on August 29, and it would be for the first time that the newly-developed portal will be utilized for registration purposes. Given the large number of school students expected to register, the Department is taking proactive measures to ensure a smooth and efficient process.

To address any potential issues with the registration process, the Sports Department, in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), will provide training to coaches from the Sports Department as well as District Physical Education Instructors (DPEs) and Physical Training Instructors (PTEs) from the School Education Department. This training aimed at equipping these officials with the necessary skills to assist students in the registration process effectively.

The training sessions are being conducted via video conferencing, starting from August 2 (Friday), followed by session on August 5 and 6. The Sports Department has requested the School Education Department to ensure the participation of their DPEs and PTEs in these training sessions. Furthermore, a detailed list of the trained DPEs and PTEs should be submitted to the Sports Department for record-keeping and further coordination.

The Sports Department’s initiative marked a significant step towards enhancing the sports infrastructure in Punjab, which was once numero uno in this field. By creating a centralized directory and leveraging digital tools for registration and record-keeping, the Sports Department aimed at fostering a more organized and supportive environment for the state’s players.

During the ongoing Paris Olympics, Punjab has sent a strong contingent of 19 athletes. Among these, 10 will showcase their skills in hockey, while six shooters are set to aim for the medals. Though wrestling has no contenders from Punjab this time, the expectations are high for the shooters, given their stellar performances in previous competitions.

Punjab’s shooters, including notable names like Sifat Kaur Samra from Faridkot, Anjum Moudgil from Mohali, Vijayveer Singh Sidhu from Mansa, Arjun Singh Cheema from Fatehgarh, Arjun Babuta from Fazilka, and Rajeshwari Kumari from Patiala, have shown remarkable prowess.

After securing a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics and a gold at the Asian Games, the Indian hockey team is now setting its sights on upgrading its medal colour at the Paris Olympics. The squad features a mix of seasoned stars and promising players, including drag-flicker and captain Harmanpreet Singh from Amritsar and defenders Jarmanpreet Singh, Shamser Singh, Gurjant Singh, and Jugraj Singh. Many of these players have previously competed in Tokyo Olympics and Asian Games. The team also includes Manpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Mandeep Singh, and Sukjeet Singh from Jalandhar, as well as Kishan Bahadur Pathak from Kapurthala.
