Punjab Police unveils 'Behind the Badge' initiative to bridge community gap

Friday, 19 July 2024 | Monika Malik | Chandigarh

In a groundbreaking initiative to demystify the lives of the men in uniform and bring people closer to them, the Punjab Police is set to unveil the personal stories of its officers and grassroots personnel. This new series, aptly titled “Behind the Badge: Punjab Police Stories,” aims to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community by showcasing the human side of those who protect and serve.

With a focus on humanizing the force, this initiative presents officers not just as enforcers of the law but as everyday heroes navigating challenges with honesty and dedication. The series attempts to shift the narrative from the perceived image of ruthless officers to highlighting their roles as honest, dedicated individuals living lives similar to those they protect.

The state Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, unveiled the teaser of this initiative on his official Twitter handle on Thursday, stating, “Ever wondered what drives your local police officer? Our ‘Behind the Badge’ initiative shares inspiring stories of #courage, #commitment & #compassion….We're more than just uniforms! Get to know us better & let's build a stronger community together! An initiative by @PathankotPolice.”

This out-of-the-box initiative seeks to portray officers not just as law enforcers, but as individuals with families, dreams, and everyday struggles. Through heartfelt accounts, the public will witness the sacrifices, triumphs, and unwavering commitment that define their service.

“Our main focus will be to show the basic stories…Obviously, we will also be showing the stories of our officers, but primarily we will be telling the stories about the police personnel at the grassroots,” Pathankot Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Suhail Qasim Mir told The Pioneer.

SSP Mir elaborated that the series will begin with narratives from Pathankot, but will eventually showcase stories from the entire police force as the name says, “Punjab Police stories”. “Through this, we want to tell people that the police is one among us…and not some other,” he added.

The series will feature short videos published on official social media platforms, each providing insights into the lives of officers, their journey to joining the police force, and their motivations. It will also offer an inside look at the daily challenges and risks they face, highlight significant accomplishments and moments of pride in their careers, and share stories of perseverance, resilience, and overcoming adversities.

“Through these personal stories, we want to humanize the police force, showcasing their dedication and the challenges faced by personnel on duty and at home in their family life, besides highlighting the sense of duty and compassion that drives them,” SSP Mir said.

By leveraging the power of social media, especially among young people, the initiative seeks to increase community engagement and support for the police force. Creating a platform for officers and personnel to share their experiences will help promote a positive image and encourage empathy and understanding from the public. Furthermore, stories of courage, commitment, and compassion will serve as inspiration not only to the community but also to other officers within the force.

This initiative aims to foster empathy and understanding among the public by sharing these stories on social media platforms. It will serve as a window into the lives of those who serve, encouraging mutual respect and community support.

“Behind the Badge promises to be a compelling series that brings the community closer to the police force by highlighting the human side of law enforcement. Through this initiative, we hope to build stronger community ties and foster a deeper appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices of our police force,” said SSP Mir, crediting the entire Pathankot Police team as the creative force behind this initiative.
