Mayawati corners SP over Sengol issue

Saturday, 29 June 2024 | PNS | Lucknow

Politics on the Sengol has heated up amidst the special session of Parliament. Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has now reacted to the demand to remove the Sengol from Parliament. She has cornered the Samajwadi Party over the issue, saying that there is need to be cautious of the tactics of SP.

Mayawati posted on ‘X’ on Friday that along with speaking on whether to put the Sengol in Parliament or not, it would have been better for the SP to corner the Central government in the interests of the weak and neglected sections of the country and on issues of general public interest.

She added that while the truth is that this party (SP) remains silent on most of such issues and after coming to power, it takes decisions against the weaker sections and ignores their great men.

She asked people to be cautious of all the tactics of SP.

There is a political uproar over the demand of SP MP RK Chaudhary from Mohanlalganj Lok Sabha seat of UP to remove the Sengol from Parliament.  Chaudhary wrote a letter to the Lok Sabha speaker and pro-tem speaker, saying that a huge copy of the Indian Constitution should be installed in place of the Sengol.

He said the Sengol was a symbol of kings and emperors, and it should be removed from Parliament. Politics intensified on this demand of the SP MP.

After this, SP national president Akhilesh Yadav came to the rescue of his party’s MP. He said that the SP MP must be saying this because when the Sengol was installed for the first time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had saluted it properly but this time, while taking oath, perhaps he forgot to do so the same. Perhaps the party MP has written such a letter to remind Modi of the same, Yadav added.
