Madhya Pradesh, known as the "Heart of India", has a rich fabric of religious and spiritual heritage, with many sites that attract pilgrims and tourists alike. Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, the State Government is taking significant steps to enhance these sites and promote religious tourism, which plays a pivotal role in the cultural economy of the State. On the occasion of the first anniversary of the present government, December 13, the Government is focusing on the renovation of existing religious sites and development of new spiritual sites to establish Madhya Pradesh as a major hub for religious tourism.
The diverse religious landscape of Madhya Pradesh comprises of Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Islam, making it an important destination for spiritual seekers. Madhya Pradesh has witnessed a significant increase in the number of tourists in recent years, especially after the successful launch of "Mahakal Mahalok" in Ujjain. There has been a substantial increase in the number of visitors to Mahakal Lok, underlining the potential of religious tourism as a catalyst for economic development and cultural preservation.
The state government, under the guidance of Mohan Yadav, has prioritized the restoration and promotion of important religious sites across the state. The aim of this initiative is not only to preserve cultural heritage but also to enhance the visitor experience. Mahakal Mahalok is the centerpiece of these efforts, which has been developed as a vibrant spiritual hub around the Mahakaleshwar temple. This redevelopment improves management and enriches the spiritual environment of this historic site.
Many religious sites in the state are being developed in accordance with their traditions. Devi Lok in Salkanpur has been developed as a Shakti Mandir site to provide easy Darshan of deity along with better access and facilities for pilgrims. Shri Hanuman Lok in Chhindwara will celebrate Lord Hanuman, creating an appealing environment for devotees and tourists. Ram Raja Lok in Orchha will honour Lord Rama and attract visitors interested in both spirituality and history. The revival of Sant Ravidas Lok in Sagar aims to honour the legacy of Sant Ravidas, to attract his followers and tourists interested in his teachings.
Historical sites like Rani Durgavati Memorial and Rani Avantibai Memorial in Jabalpur are also being promoted by highlighting their cultural significance, while also taking care of visitors interested in both history and spirituality. Besides, improvements are being made at Maa Narmada Mahalok in Amarkantak to enhance visitor amenities and promote its natural beauty. The government is also focusing on developing new spiritual sites like Devi Ahilyabai Lok in Khargone, Nagalwadi Lok in Barwani district, with an emphasis on creating a serene atmosphere.
While Jam Sawanli Hanuman Lok in Gwalior will celebrate the power and devotion of Lord Hanuman, the Janapav, known as the birthplace of Lord Parshuram, will be developed as Parshuram Lok, which will have a new temple dedicated to Lord Parshuram with various facilities for visitors. The project also includes bringing Narmada water and constructing a ropeway for easy access. Maa Pitambara Lok in Datia is another important site dedicated to Goddess Pitambara. Mata Mandir Lok in Ratangarh will also become a major religious tourist destination with an iconic temple dedicated to Goddess Durga.
The Madhya Pradesh government is also going to launch the Vrindavan Gram Yojana, under which selected gram panchayats will be converted into model villages promoting rural development. Gaushalas will be built in each selected village to protect cows while promoting local dairy production. To further enrich the spiritual landscape of urban Madhya Pradesh, Gita Bhawan centres are being set up in all urban bodies. These centres will focus on spreading the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and other scriptures, as well as provide access to literature related to spiritual teachings. The nearly 100 tourism projects will see an investment of about Rs 2,200 crore from the government, reflecting Madhya Pradesh's commitment to boosting religious tourism.
Recognising the potential of international tourism, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board is actively engaging with global markets to attract tourists from abroad. Initiatives such as promoting rural home-stays with subsidies for local tribes boost security for international tourists through training programmes as well as provide them with a good accommodation experience.
