Himachal to launch 'Nasha Mukt Abhiyan' to tackle drug menace

Monday, 30 September 2024 | PNS | Shimla

In an ambitious move to counter the rising drug abuse in the hill state, the Himachal Pradesh Government is preparing to launch the ‘Nasha Mukt Himachal Abhiyan’. The comprehensive campaign, aimed at eradicating the drug menace, will be spearheaded by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Unveiling the initiative on Sunday, Sukhu emphasized the government's commitment to confronting one of the gravest challenges affecting public health and social well-being in the region.

Chief Minister Sukhu underscored the multifaceted threat posed by drug abuse, noting its far-reaching consequences on social stability and economic progress. “Our government is fully committed to tackling the challenge of drug abuse head-on. This issue represents one of the greatest threats to our society, affecting public health, social stability, and economic well-being. We aim to protect future generations from falling into this quagmire and shield our citizens from the devastating effects of drug abuse,” he said.

The 'Nasha Mukt Himachal Abhiyan' will deploy a strategic three-pronged approach, targeting prevention, early identification, and rehabilitation. Special attention will be given to educational institutions, industrial zones, and urban centers, where the risk of drug abuse is high. This initiative will rely on the active participation of local stakeholders, including Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), Yuvak Mandals, Mahila Mandals, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Their involvement at the grassroots level will help spread awareness and foster a sense of community responsibility in combating the drug problem.

A critical component of the campaign is the establishment of detoxification and counseling centers in government hospitals and community health centers. These facilities, equipped with five to 10 beds, will offer treatment and diagnostic services, supporting the rehabilitation process. Furthermore, infrastructure upgrades are underway to enhance the state’s capacity for treating and reintegrating drug addicts into society.

In addition to the rehabilitation efforts, Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted the formation of a specialized force dedicated to preventing drug-related crimes. This force will work in conjunction with law enforcement agencies, guided by a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) recently published by the Police Department. The SOP outlines effective strategies for tackling drug trafficking and associated illegal activities, ensuring that officers and officials are well-equipped to combat these issues.

The campaign will also leverage the power of social media to reach a broader audience, raising awareness among the public about the harmful effects of drug use. The State Government is determined to engage the youth and local communities through dynamic outreach programs, ensuring that the message of prevention resonates across all demographics.
