A team of expert surgeons from AIIMS Bhopal recently performed a highly intricate surgery to remove a football-sized tumor from a patient's face. The surgery, which lasted over six hours, was a resounding success, offering the patient a new lease on life.
The patient presented with an enormous tumor, measuring 12 × 8 × 12 cm, originating from the right parotid gland.
This tumor, located beneath the main facial nerve and its five supporting nerves, posed significant risks due to its continuous growth. The increasing size of the tumor threatened to impair the patient's vision and risk nerve rupture, necessitating immediate and expert intervention.
Professor Dr. Manish Swarnkar of the General Surgery Department, who led the surgical team, explained the complexity of the case. "Prima facie, it appeared to be a parotid tumor. The histopathology examination has now confirmed this. The tumor had spread from the lower part of the face, exerting pressure on the facial nerve and its branches. These nerves are crucial for controlling facial expressions and the muscles of the eyes, lips, forehead, ears, and nose. Preserving the integrity of these nerves during surgery was a monumental challenge. Even the slightest error could have resulted in the loss of control over vital facial functions."
The successful surgical team included Dr. Manish Swarnkar, Dr. Murat Singh, Dr. Harsh Vaidya, and anesthetist Dr. Sandeep. Their collaborative efforts ensured the safe and complete removal of the tumor, while meticulously preserving the patient's facial nerve function.
