Cases of fish deaths have been reported at Jayanti Sarovar, in Jubilee Park, raising alarm among local residents and environmentalists. The fatalities, primarily affecting tilapia fish, have occurred at an unusual time of year, prompting an immediate investigation by Tata Steel UISL (formerly JUSCO), which manages the lake within Jubilee Park.
Fish mortality at the lake is typically observed during the hot summer months due to a variety of natural causes. However, the appearance of fish deaths in the current cooler season has not been seen in previous years. The company confirmed the unusual timing of the event, stating that "this has not been witnessed in past years."
A press communique issued by the company said that following similar incidents in the past, Tata Steel UISL had put several preventive measures in place to combat fish mortality and ensure the health of the aquatic environment at Jayanti Sarovar. The company outlined the actions taken earlier this year, which were thought to have been successful during the summer: Algae removal to prevent oxygen depletion and maintain water quality. Spraying of chemicals to balance the lake's pH and oxygen levels. Application of therapeutic chemicals to prevent fish diseases and strengthen their resilience. Regular removal of overpopulating tilapia fish from the lake to maintain ecological balance.
These efforts were effective during the summer, as no significant fish deaths were observed during that period. Despite these interventions, the sudden onset of fish mortality has prompted Tata Steel UISL to assign a team of experts to investigate the cause. "We are currently investigating the cause, and appropriate steps will be taken based on the findings," the company stated.
The death of fish, particularly the tilapia species, is being closely monitored, and the company has assured the public that it is taking all necessary actions to address the issue. The investigation is expected to reveal whether the deaths are linked to environmental factors, water quality, or other unforeseen causes.
The deaths have sparked concern among residents and environmental groups, as Jayanti Sarovar is not only a popular recreational spot but also home to various aquatic species. With the current fish mortality raising questions about the lake's health, locals are keenly awaiting updates from the ongoing investigation.
