A team of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) foiled a gold smuggling bid and seized 9,180 grams of the yellow metal following a raid carried out at the Manguli toll plaza in Cuttack district.
The DRI arrested two persons in this connection and initiated a detailed probe into the incident.
Based on specific information regarding the movement of foreign-origin smuggled gold from Kolkata by a car, the DRI raided the toll plaza on the evening of March 28, leading to the seizure of the huge cache of gold.
While searching the vehicle, a total of 65 pieces of smuggled gold bullion valued at Rs 6,45 crore were recovered which was concealed in a cavity of the vehicle.
“Recovered gold along with vehicle were seized and two persons were arrested under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962. A detailed probe is underway,” a DRI senior official said.
Notably, the destination where the smuggled gold was being transported was yet to be ascertained.
