Dharmashastra National Law University (DNLU) successfully hosted the National Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Deep Fake, and Regulatory Mechanism for AI jointly organised with Law Commission of India on July 27, 2024, at PDPM IIITDM campus.
The conference was inaugurated in the gracious presence of Chief Guest, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Acting Chief Justice of High Court of MP while delivering the keynote address shared extensive experience and insight into the judicial implications of artificial intelligence set a profound tone for the conference. Hon’ble Justice Sachdeva highlighted how India hasn’t brushed the tip of the iceberg when it comes to regulation or identifying the implications of AI on the society and different stakeholders especially judiciary. He highlighted various issues that the laws aren’t equipped to tackle and adjudicate upon. He also stated that judges and legal field isn’t ready for AI.
Earlier in the event, Prof Manoj Kumar Sinha, the Vice Chancellor of DNLU welcomed the dignitaries, guests and students. He stated how there has been lack of expertise while dealing with AI. He also stated that BCI wants Law Schools to introduce new subjects in line with National Education Policy to integration with technology and collaborate with all stakeholders in legal field.
Reeta Vasishta, ILS, Member Secretary Law Commission of India also addressed the gathering, appreciating the judiciary for integrating AI in their judicial system for translating documents into regional languages, National Judicial Data Grid of SC with help of IT Ministry and probable questions such as whether it can influence human decision making, potential biases and challenges, and whether AI can replace human judgment.
The event featured a series of sessions covering a range of topics related to artificial intelligence, deep fakes, and the necessary regulatory frameworks. Prominent sessions included ‘AI in context of Deep Fake’ featuring eminent panelists such as Prof Anand Paliwal, Prof Raka Arya, Part-Time Member, LCI, Prof Pritee Khanna, Professor IN-charge IIITDM and Gargi Chakrabarti, Associate Professor DNLU and session on ‘Legal Challenges and India’s approach towards regulating AI & Future’ featuring renowned panelists as Prof DP Verma, Member LCI, Anoop Nair, Senior Advocate, High Court of M.P., Prof Aparajita Ojha, Professor IIITDM, Ashit Srivastava, Assistant Professor of Law DNLU.
The conference concluded in auspicious presence of Hon’ble Justice Vishal Dhagat, Judge, High Court of M.P. While delivering the valedictory address his Lordship’s closing remarks encapsulated the discussions and insights gathered throughout the day, providing a forward-looking perspective on the integration of AI in various sectors while maintaining ethical standards highlighting AI has intelligence but not wisdom and we should keep creativity to ourselves & manual work to AI.
During the valedictory session, the welcome address was delivered by Prof Bhartendu K. Singh, Director of IIITDM, stating that as a technology, design and manufacturing institute IITDM has been dealing with AI almost every day and perspectives from legal field through this conference will be helpful while appreciating the interdisciplinary aspect of the conference followed by addresses from Hon’ble Justice K.T. Sankaran, Member of the Law Commission of India, who highlighted the effects of technology on society by taking us down a memory lane & how right to privacy has been in debate with newer technology..
The sessions were moderated by Manwendra Kumar Tiwari, Associate Professor of Law and Shashank Pathak, Assistant Professor of Law. Praveen Tripathi, Associate Professor of Law & Dean of Student Welfare and Prof Shailesh N. Hadli, Registrar DNLU delivered the vote of thanks.
