District Administration and Thalassemia Society unite for mega awareness drive

Monday, 12 August 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

: In a bid to combat the growing concern of thalassemia and promote public awareness about this genetic disorder, the District Administration of East Singhbhum, in collaboration with the Thalassemia Society of Jamshedpur, organized a "Mega Thalassemia Awareness Program" at Kerala Public School, Kadma. The event was graced by District Magistrate cum Deputy Commissioner  Ananya Mittal, who attended as the chief guest and formally inaugurated the program alongside other distinguished dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering,  Mittal emphasized the critical need for widespread public awareness to prevent the spread of thalassemia. "Awareness is the only prevention," he stated, highlighting the significance of community involvement in eradicating the disease. He commended the Thalassemia Society, Jamshedpur, for its tireless efforts in raising awareness and urged every citizen to take social responsibility seriously, drawing parallels with the successful polio eradication campaign. He also lauded the volunteers’ dedication to the cause and encouraged their continued efforts.

Thalassemia, a hereditary blood disorder characterized by abnormal or insufficient hemoglobin production, remains a significant health challenge in India. The disorder leads to the destruction of red blood cells, causing severe anemia and requiring regular blood transfusions for those affected. The Mega Awareness Program aimed to educate the youth about the importance of early detection and prevention, underscoring that informed communities are better equipped to combat such genetic conditions.

The event also featured insightful speeches from key figures in the medical and social sectors.  Sharat Chandran, Director of Kerala Public Group of Schools, and Sunil Mukherjee, President of the Voluntary Blood Donors Association, emphasized the importance of public engagement in awareness campaigns. Dr. Sanjay Chaudhary of the Jamshedpur Blood Bank and Dr. Amit Mukherjee provided detailed information on the medical aspects of thalassemia, outlining the necessity for timely blood donations and the potential for prevention through genetic counseling and pre-marriage testing.

The program saw participation from a wide array of stakeholders, including principals from both private and government schools, representatives from corporate houses, members of Rotary and Lions Clubs, and prominent medical professionals. The diverse turnout highlighted the community's commitment to addressing the thalassemia challenge.

In his concluding remarks,  Mittal announced the formation of a District Core Team, comprising officers from the departments of Health, Education, Panchayati Raj, Social Welfare, and Public Relations, among others. This team will work closely with the Thalassemia Society to implement precautionary and preventive measures at various levels, including schools, industrial houses, and community blocks. The District Administration aims to tackle thalassemia with the same rigor that led to the eradication of polio, ensuring that future generations are free from this debilitating disease.

Also in attendance were key district officials, including DTO  Dhananjay, District Panchayat Raj Officer  Rinku Kumari, District Social Welfare Officer  Sandhya Rani, and District Public Relations Officer  Panchanan Oraon. Their presence underscored the district administration's commitment to making thalassemia prevention a top priority.
