Congress pick Raj Babbar files nomination for Gurugram LS seat

Saturday, 04 May 2024 | Parvesh Sharma | Gurugram

Actor turned politician Raj Babbar, who is contesting the Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket, on Friday filed his nomination papers for the Gurugram seat.

Babbar will be up against BJP candidate and union minister Rao Inderjit Singh and the Jannayak Janta party (JJP) candidate Rahul Yadav alias Fazilpuria. He was accompanied by senior Congress leader and former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Congress Haryana President Chaudhary Uday Bhan while filing his nomination.

After submitting the affidavit, Babbar along with party leaders addressed a public rally at the Old Club Ground, Civil Lines where he urged the people to vote for him.

However, Captain (Retd) Ajay Yadav stayed away from the rally after the Congress party denied him a ticket. As a result, lots of chairs in the rally were empty. A number of people from the neighbouring Nuh district attended the rally.

While criticising the opposition, Babbar said Gurugram has three big agencies Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Haryana Shehari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) and Municipal Corporation Manesar (MCG) and has a 5,000 crore budget but despite this, Haryana’s biggest and most developed city is suffering from pathetic infrastructure and people are bereft of basic facilities.

Taking a dig at the opposition for labelling him an outsider in Gurugram, Babbar said, “Na Mai Bari Hoon Aur Na Hi Bahari Hoon”. My roots are from Haryana, my relatives are living in different parts of the state.”

He pointed out that he is not contesting against anyone but wants to provide basic facilities to the people of the constituency. He slammed veteran BJP leader Rao Inderjit Singh and said that despite being a ruling party MP for the last 10 years, he failed to expand the railway network in Nuh or the metro line in Gurugram and even failed to improve the city’s overall conditions.

Babbar said he has no house here in Gurugram but he wants to stay here in the constituency to resolve the long pending problem of the people. So vote for the Congress party and allow improving the situation on the ground.

The people across the world are living in Gurugram but during the rainy season I have seen people forced to stay inside and even used boats to travel on city roads,” he said.

He said the opposition is only making hollow promises and failed to complete the long pending Metro project till Manesar. I have seen that the situation gets pretty bad during the monsoon season. The roads and the sewage system are in a poor state and need massive upgradation,” he said.

While speaking to The Pioneer Babbar said here in MCG there is huge corruption in the name of making property ID once the Congress party returns to power strict action will be initiated against those behind corruption.”  Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that this time Haryana voters will cast their vote to uproot BJP from the Centre and state.

Bhupinder Hooda addressed a rally in Gurugram on Friday, in support of Raj Babbar from Gurugram seat.

Making a direct attack on BJP’s candidate Rao Inderjit Singh said people here in Gurugram do not have his number and even do not know where they can meet him.

“Raj Babbar is not a Congress candidate but he is an India Alliance candidate. If the Congress party came into power we would provide a legal guarantee on MSP. The party will provide Rs 1 lakh to elderly women yearly, and Rs 1 lakh to unemployed youth yearly. Old age pension will be increased by Rs, 3,000 to 6,000, residents plots to poor people.”
