CME & workshop on 'Serous Fluid Cytology' held

Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine organised a one day CME & workshop 'SerousFluid cytology' on Thursday. The serous fluid cytology pertains to study of effusions affecting the body cavity like pleural cavity, peritoneal cavity and pericardial cavity.

The etiology behind these effusions may be neoplastic causes like metastatic carcinoma, mesothelioma or may be non-neoplastic like tuberculosis and other reactive conditions. Some staging systems also consider serous fluid cytology for staging of malignancy.

Prof Vaishali Walke, HOD, Deptt of Pathology and Lab Medicine was the organizing chairperson, Prof. Deepti Joshi was the Co- Chairperson. Dr. Ujjawal Khurana was the organizing secretary, Prof. Garima Goel was the treasurer, Dr Jai Kumar Chaurasia was the joint organizing secretary & workshop coordinator and Dr.HemlataPanwar was the work shop coordinator for microscopy session.

Hundred delegates of various cadres, senior faculties, post graduate students and consultant pathologist, all across Madhya Pradesh had registered for the event.

The event was inaugurated by chief guest, Prof. (Dr) Ajai Singh, Executive Director and CEO AIIMS Bhopal. The inaugural ceremony had the presence of guest of honour, DD(A) Col .Ajit Kumar, Medical Superintendent Prof.ShashankPurwar and former HOD Prof. Neelkamal Kapoor, and other august audience.

Prof. Vinod Shidham, FRCPath, FIAC, Director of Cytopathology, Deptt of Pathology, Wayne State University School of Medicine & Detroit Medical Centre USA was the guest speaker for the event and he delivered talks on vital topics like algorithmic approach, Ancillary techniques, Cell blockistry.

There were talks by inhouse faculty on Cytopreparatory techniques, Overview of International System for reporting Serous Fluid Cytology and 5 interesting cases were presented from the deptt case collection. 

Post lunch parallel workshop sessions on microscopic glass slide viewing and live demonstration of various techniques of Cell Block preparation were organized. Prof. Shidham shared his patented technique of cell blockistry with the delegates and it was highly appreciated by delegates. More than 40 glass slides were displayed for the microscopic session.

The delegates have thoroughly enjoyed the academic feast and were benefited from the workshop.
