BSF intercepts 200 drones at Punjab border in 2024

Monday, 11 November 2024 | PNS | Chandigarh

The Border Security Force (BSF) has intercepted over 200 rogue drones along Punjab’s international border in 2024, marking a significant surge in cross-border threats compared to 107 drone recoveries in 2023. These drones, allegedly originating from Pakistan, have been linked to smuggling operations involving drugs, weapons, and other contraband, posing a persistent challenge to Indian border security.

Records indicated that since November 1 alone, BSF teams have shot down or recovered 11 drones near border villages, seizing approximately three kg of narcotics in the process. Covering Punjab’s 553-km international border, BSF’s vigilance is stretched across challenging terrains, particularly riverine stretches along the Sutlej and Ravi rivers. Despite the BSF’s concerted efforts, these vast and vulnerable stretches continue to see infiltration attempts.

The increase in drone interceptions has been a result of BSF’s “enhanced anti-drone strategies” and the deployment of cutting-edge counter-drone technology. “This surge in captures represents a remarkable milestone in our efforts to curb cross-border smuggling,” said a senior BSF official. Advanced jamming technology and on-ground intelligence have allowed BSF teams to neutralize these drones mid-flight or recover them on Indian soil.

A significant number of the drones intercepted this year have been identified as Chinese-manufactured, a trend the BSF attributes to a growing reliance on technology by Pakistani narcotics groups. These groups allegedly aim to “destabilize” Indian communities by fostering drug addiction, particularly among youth, thereby weakening the societal fabric.

Since the “drone menace” first emerged around 2019-20, it has heavily impacted the border areas of Amritsar and Tarn Taran in Punjab, where nearly all cross-border drug smuggling is now conducted via drones. Previously used methods, such as cross-border pipes or thrown packages, have largely been replaced by drone deliveries.

BSF officials remain committed to countering this threat, underscoring the importance of ongoing vigilance and technological advancements to protect the integrity of India’s borders.
