Gurugram Police Arrests Fraudster in Rs 77 lakh Stock Investment Scam

Gurugram: Gurugram Police has arrested a man in connection with a cyber fraud of Rs 77 lakh involving fake stock market investments promising high returns. According to police, the arrested accused was identified as Ritav Ur Javed Jhinjha, a native of Fazilka in Punjab. He was arrested by a team of cybercrime, east police station, on Friday. The detention of Jhinjha, who was nabbed in Fazilka, is the ninth arrest in the case. In April this year, a local resident reported being defrauded of Rs 77 lakh through a fake stock market investment scheme, following which an FIR was lodged and an investigation taken up.
During interrogation, Jhinjha revealed that he had siphoned Rs 5 lakh from the defrauded amount and transferred it to other associates, said a spokesperson of Gurugram Police. "Eight cases of attempt to murder, extortion, assault and possession of illegal weapons are already registered against the accused (Jhinjha) in Chandigarh, Punjab and Rajasthan. We are questioning the accused," the spokesperson added.

SAD to hold dharnas to expose AAP govt's anti-people policies

Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will hold district-level 'dharnas' in Punjab to "expose the anti-people policies of the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government," the party's working president Balwinder Singh Bhundar said on Saturday.   In a statement, Bhundar said the district-level 'dharnas' will begin on September 10 from Ludhiana, followed by Ferozepur on September 11, Fazilka on 12, Moga on 13, Sri Mukatsar Sahib on 16, Bathinda on 17, Mansa on 18, Sangrur on 19, Barnala on 20 and in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar on September 23. The party will "expose" the government on how it has "failed" the common man by withdrawing power subsidies, repeatedly increasing value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel, and increasing bus fare by 23 paise per kilometer, besides other "anti-people" decisions, including increasing tax on vehicles and registration fees of land deeds, said Bhundar. Fuel prices have gone up in Punjab after the state Cabinet on Thursday gave an approval to hike VAT on petrol and diesel by 61 paise a litre and 92 paise per litre, respectively. The Cabinet had also given the nod to withdraw the previous Congress government's decision to provide a power subsidy of Rs 3 per unit for domestic consumers.

3 Himachal districts at risk of low flash floods

Shimla: Forty-seven roads in Himachal Pradesh were closed on Saturday following continuous rainfall as the local MeT warned of low flash flood risk in Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur districts. Eighteen power and one water supply scheme have also been affected in the state, the state emergency operation centre said. The local meteorological office has warned of low to moderate flash flood risk in parts of Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur districts till Sunday.  A total of 47 roads, including 13 in Mandi, 11 in Kangra, nine each in Shimla and Kullu, two in Una and one each in Kinnaur, Sirmaur and Lahaul and Spiti districts are closed for traffic, the centre said.

International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Observed

Chandigarh: Chandigarh’s the Garden of Silence at Sukhna Lake, was illuminated in gold to raise awareness about childhood cancer. Cancer Awareness Month, is observed globally throughout September. The initiative was spearheaded by Access Life, an NGO dedicated to providing nutrition, counselling, education, shelter, and transportation for families with children battling cancer.  Children fighting cancer, along with their parents, Chandigarh staff, volunteers, and students, participated in this event. Ms. Isha Nehru, Centre Manager for Access Life Chandigarh, informed Access Life has been organizing this event annually during September for the past few years.

World Physiotherapy Day Celebration at PGIMER

Chandigarh: The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, celebrated World Physiotherapy Day with a series of engaging activities. Prof. M.S. Dhillon, Director of Orthopedics at Fortis Mohali, graced the event as the Guest of Honor.  Prof. Sameer Aggarwal, Head of the Department of PRM, inaugurated the event, highlighting the importance of physiotherapy in improving quality of life, especially in managing chronic conditions like back pain.  A special highlight was the “Significant Contribution Award” presented to Dr.Prattima Ratan(PT) for her outstanding work in physiotherapy and commitment to patient care. Speakers shared valuable insights on low back pain management. This event was organized by PGIMER Physiotherapist Association.  

Punjab CS emphasizes the importance of education for students and teachers

Chandigarh/Patiala: Punjab Chief Secretary Anurag Verma, emphasized that education is the most powerful tool to bridge societal divides, including those between rural and urban areas, poverty and wealth, as well as gender and caste. During his visit to his native village, Chalela, Verma distributed uniforms to students of the local government school in remembrance of his late father, Prof. B.C. Verma. He was accompanied by his wife, Navdeep Verma, and their son, Ayaan Verma. The Chief Secretary also inaugurated a new Commerce stream at the school, providing students with broader academic opportunities.
Addressing the students, Verma shared personal anecdotes about the transformative power of education within his own family. He encouraged both students and teachers to focus intently on studies, stating that hard work and dedication can propel any student from the village to great heights. “There are no limits to what you can achieve with persistence, and your efforts will surely be rewarded,” he said.

Punjab VB arrests three more accused in PSIEC plot allotment case
 
Chandigarh: The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested Darshan Kumar, alias Darshan Garg, and Amarjit Singh, both retired Estate Officers along with Vijay Kumar Gupta, Senior Assistant, in connection with the fraudulent allotment of industrial plots of the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation Limited (PSIEC). An official spokesperson of the VB informed that the arrests followed the accused have surrendering in the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Mohali. The officials in connivance with others had committed irregularities in the allotment of industrial plots by using bogus buyers, fake addresses, and fictitious firms. In this case, further investigation was under progress, a spokesperson added.

PEDA invites applications for 20K agri-solar pumps 

Chandigarh: To harness solar power for greening the agriculture sector in Punjab, the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has invited applications for 20,000 solar pumps (Surface & Submersible) dedicated to agricultural use. Punjab New and Renewable Energy Sources Minister Aman Arora on Saturday said that farmers interested in installing solar pumps can now apply online at www.pmkusum.peda.gov.in from September 9th to September 30th. Farmers have the option to apply for solar pumps with capacities of 3, 5, 7.5, and 10 HP. A subsidy of 60% for General category farmers and 80% for Scheduled Caste (SC) farmers is available for the solar pump installations. Additionally, the state government has set aside 2000 solar pumps for SC farmers and 3000 for Gram Panchayats, he added. The minister said that the farmers who have PSPCL electric motor connections or have installed solar pumps for irrigation in their names or in the name of their family members are not eligible to apply under this scheme.
