A surgery for a malignant brain tumor was done successfully at AIIMS Bhopal in the Department of Neurosurgery on a 13-year-old female who is a resident of Ashok Nagar. The surgery was done on July 4, 2024, at AIIMS Bhopal. The tumor was exploding out of the skull and was the size of a football.

A 13-year-old female presented in an emergency and was on a ventilator. M.R.I. of the brain showed that a large tumor was in the brain, and it eroded the skull and came out.  An intrapartmental meeting was held by Prof. Amit Agrawal, Dr Adesh Shrivastava, Dr. Sumit Raj, and Dr. Pradeep Chouksey, and it was decided to do an emergency surgery to save the child. The case was operated on July 4, 2024, at AIIMS Bhopal in Neurosurgery OT.

A few months back she was operated for a small tumour over the same area in Ashok Nagar, which suggested a malignant round cell tumour. But in a few months, it again grew to a monstrous size.

The surgery was done by Dr. Sumit Raj. The case was assisted by Dr. Jitendra and Dr. Abhishek. It took around 8 hours to operate the case. The tumour was highly vascular, and the skull was involved, which was removed. The defect of skull was covered with a titanium plate. The skin was closed with the help of a plastic surgery team comprised of Dr Gaurav Chaturvedi and Vikas.The anesthesia team played an important role in carrying out the procedure, which was done by Dr. Ashutosh and Milind.

The patient became conscious the very next day and is doing well in the postoperative period. Such cases are handled only in specialized centers. Only a few cases of primary malignant round cell tumour of calvarium have been reported till date in the world.
