In a significant achievement, SAIL's Bokaro Steel Plant has been awarded the prestigious Kalinga Environmental Excellence Award in the highest Five Star Category. This accolade marks a triumphant start to the new financial year for the plant, renowned for its commitment to sustainable steelmaking.
The 9th edition of the 'National Conclave on Environment, Energy and Climate Change (EECC)' announced this accolade, recognizing organizations excelling in environmental stewardship. The event, organized by the Institute of Quality & Environment Management Services (IQEMS) in collaboration with the Institute of Public Enterprises, Hyderabad, and the State Pollution Control Board, Odisha, will host the awards ceremony on June 8, 2024, at Hotel The New Marion, Bhubaneswar.
The Bokaro Steel Plant's journey to this award began with an application filed by its Environment Conservation & Sustainability (ECS) Department. On May 15, 2024, Nitesh Ranjan, AGM (Environment), delivered a compelling presentation before a distinguished panel of industry, academia, and sustainability experts. NP Srivastava, GM (Environment), adeptly addressed the jury's queries, highlighting the plant's dynamic environmental initiatives and sustainable steelmaking practices.
The jury was notably impressed by Bokaro Steel Plant's innovative measures in environmental protection and sustainability. The plant's achievements in reducing particulate matter emissions by 12.07% and specific effluent discharge by 77.3% over the past three financial years were pivotal in securing the award. Additionally, the plant achieved 100% solid waste utilization in FY 2023-24 and has planted over 4.9 million saplings since its inception.
Notably, under the leadership of Director-In-Charge BK Tiwari, Bokaro Steel Plant has driven the integration of operational excellence and sustainability across various verticals, leveraging circular economy principles, energy efficiency, and environmental conservation as key enablers.
The Kalinga Environmental Excellence Award is highly coveted, involving a rigorous evaluation process that includes application submission, on-site assessments, presentations, and final jury scoring. The award framework assesses statutory compliance, leadership, governance, and performance tailored to each industry sector, recognizing organizations dedicated to environmental and societal well-being.
