BJP’s Tiwari secures third time win against INDIA Bloc’s Kanhaiya

Wednesday, 05 June 2024 | Saumya Shukla | New Delhi

In a prestige battle for the hot seat of Northeast Delhi, the two time BJP MP Manoj Tiwari secured a third term by defeating the joint Congress and INDIA alliance candidate and former JNU student union president Kanhaiya Kumar by a margin of over one lakh votes on Tuesday. Kumar was considered an outsider in the Congress who could get support from local leaders during the campaign.

The area, which boasts a considerable Muslim population, elected the bhojpuri actor and singer turned politician as its MP with more than eight lakh votes in the Lok Sabha 2024 election. Thanking all voters of his constituency for making him emerge victorious, he stated, "It is a very good feeling that the party has shown trust in us and the people of our area gave a lot of confidence, especially in the situation when I was attacked by the candidate, and AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal saying that they need to defeat Rinkiya's father, they were saying to defeat the father of a daughter. All these things are in my mind, but my character is different."

The student leader turned politician is facing a successive loss in the general elections, with Kumar contesting unsuccessfully from Bihar’s Begusarai, on the CPI’s ticket, in 2019 against BJP’s Giriraj Singh. Kumar secured about seven lakhs votes in his debut in the national capital with the BSP candidate Ashok Kumar securing more than 10,000 votes. A total of 28 candidates contested from the seat, with nine independent candidates in the fray. About 6,000 votes were casted for NOTA in the constituency.

Despite AAP and Congress fighting the Lok Sabha 2024 election together in an alliance in the national capital, with the former contesting on four seats and the latter fielding candidates from three seats, its candidate failed to secure a single seat.
