BEYOND THE PERFECT PICTURE: SKILLS LEARNT AS A MODEL THAT TRANSLATE WELL TO BUSINESS

Sunday, 16 June 2024 | Rachna Tiwari

As someone who has started in the world of modeling and now combined that with the fast-paced realm of business, I can confidently say that the skills honed on the runway and in front of the camera have been invaluable in my entrepreneurial journey. While the superficial aspects of modeling often dominate public perception, the profession equips individuals with a unique set of abilities that translate seamlessly into the business world. Here are a few key skills that have been particularly beneficial.

1. Personal Branding and Presentation: In modeling, creating a personal brand is crucial. Models must consistently present themselves in a way that aligns with the image they want to project. This experience has given me a keen understanding of how to build and maintain a brand, a vital skill in any business. Whether it’s pitching to investors or marketing a product, the ability to present oneself and one’s business effectively is indispensable.

2. Resilience and Adaptability: The modeling industry is notoriously competitive and filled with rejection. This environment cultivates resilience and adaptability—traits that are equally essential in business. I learned to handle setbacks gracefully and adapt quickly to changing circumstances, skills that have helped me navigate the inevitable ups and downs of entrepreneurship.

3. Networking and Relationship Building: Success in modeling often depends on the relationships built with photographers, designers, and clients. This has taught me the importance of networking and maintaining professional relationships. In business, networking can open doors to new opportunities, partnerships, and clients, making it a critical component of growth and success.

4. Discipline and Time Management: Modeling demands strict discipline and excellent time management. Punctuality and the ability to juggle multiple commitments are non-negotiable. These attributes have been instrumental in managing my business, ensuring that projects are completed on time and that I can effectively balance various responsibilities.

5. Attention to Detail: Every shoot and runway show requires meticulous attention to detail, from the fit of the clothes to the expression on the model’s face. This precision has translated well into business, where attention to detail can mean the difference between success and failure. Whether it’s reviewing contracts or perfecting a product, this skill ensures high standards are consistently met.

6. Confidence and Public Speaking: Confidence is a cornerstone of modeling. Walking down a runway or posing for a camera requires a certain level of self-assuredness. This confidence extends to public speaking and presentations, crucial aspects of business. The ability to communicate effectively and with confidence can inspire teams and persuade stakeholders.

7. Creative Problem-Solving: Modeling often involves thinking on your feet and finding creative solutions to unexpected problems, whether it’s a wardrobe malfunction or a last-minute change in the shoot plan. This experience fosters a creative approach to problem-solving, an invaluable asset in business where innovation and agility are key to overcoming challenges.

In conclusion, moving from modeling to business may seem like a leap, but the skills developed in the fashion industry are surprisingly transferable. The discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking required to succeed in modeling provide a solid foundation for entrepreneurial success. For those looking to make a similar transition, embracing and leveraging these skills can pave the way for a rewarding and prosperous business career.
