In a shocking incident in Bareilly’s Fatehganj East area, an 18-year-old BA student was given a cold drink laced with intoxicants and gang-raped by the accused.
The victim was later thrown at a secluded place after her condition turned critical. She was finally admitted to a hospital and information was also sent to the local police by the doctors but the cops took no cognisance. Only after the district magistrate intervened in the matter on Tuesday evening, the cops registered a case and also claimed to have picked up one of the accused.
Reports said that the victim, a BA first year student from a village under Fatehganj East police station of Bareilly, was lured by some youths known to her when she was going to college on June 19 last. The youths took her to a restaurant on the highway and drugged her by mixing some intoxicant in her cold drink. When she fell unconscious, they took her to a secluded place and gang-raped her. The accused also allegedly put some object on her private part following which she started bleeding heavily, and fearing that she might succumb, the youths threw her on the highway in Fatehpur East area and escaped.
Meanwhile, some passersby rescued the girl and also informed her family before shifting her to a hospital. The doctors, who saw the girl in critical state after being gang-raped, immediately sent a memo to the local police station finding it to be a medico legal case. The cops, however, took no cognisance of the memo. After the girl’s condition deteriorated on Tuesday evening, the hapless parents met the district magistrate of Bareilly and requested him to take cognisance of the matter and also ensure proper treatment of the victim.
The family claimed that when the district magistrate intervened in the matter and directed police to take action, the local cops and the team of Special Operation Group picked up one the accused and grilled him on Tuesday night.
Sources said that the inspector general of police of Bareilly range and other senior police officers also visited hospital and enquired about the health of the victim. They claimed that there was a possibility of not one but two to three accused being involved in the incident.
The police are investigating the entire matter. Inspector-in-charge of Fatehganj East police station, Madan Mohan Chaturvedi, said a case has been registered in the case of rape of the student and a youth from the same village had been taken into custody and was being questioned.
The student is undergoing treatment in the hospital.
