Military strategist and author Lt-Gen Harwant Singh launched his latest work, ‘Lest We Forget - A Book on War Memorials’, a poignant tribute to the unsung heroes who have sacrificed their lives in defense of the nation, here on Friday.
This coffee table, spanning over 120 pages, features narratives and about 50 illustrations showcasing various war memorials from India and around the world.
The book was launched by Lt. Gen. Bhopinder Singh, the former Lieutenant Governor of The Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Pondicherry and an Indian Army Commander and Admiral Sunil Lanba, Ex Naval Chief.
Lt-Gen Harwant Singh's narrative delves into the evolution of war memorials, their profound significance in national memory, and the enduring legacy they leave behind. “In 'Lest We Forget’, I aim to honor the courage and sacrifice of countless men and women who laid down their lives for our tomorrow,” he remarked, adding, “This book is not just about remembering history but also about cherishing the values of freedom and sacrifice that these memorials represent.”
The book includes detailed accounts of selected war memorials, both domestic and international, chosen for their historical significance. Additionally, it pays homage to three pivotal battles – one fought by Indian soldiers against the British, another under the British flag, and a third under the Indian tricolor post-independence. These narratives underscore the unwavering commitment of Indian soldiers encapsulated in the motto "Naam, Namak, Nishan."
In addition to ‘Lest We Forget’, Lt-Gen Harwant Singh also launched ‘Perspectives from the Veteran's Desk’, a compilation of his insights on defense, geopolitics, and national security, offering perspectives on issues of strategic importance. In this book, he has compiled some of his choicest articles from over 500 articles he’s published over the last 3 decades in various leading national and regional newspapers and journals.
