Union Minister of Higher Education and Skill Development Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday wrote to the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister requesting him to have a memorial with a life-size horse-riding statue of Veer Surendra Sai at the Asirgarh Fort, his final resting place.
Pradhan stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has time and again emphasised on celebrating the unsung tribal heroes of the freedom struggle and the nation-wide movement of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ has celebrated the feats and valour of these heroes.
The revolt of Surendra Sai in the Sambalpur region spanning in two phases; one from 1827 to 1840 and another from 1857 to 1862, was significant in the history of Odisha's resistance movement against British imperialism, he pointed out.
“In view of this, it would be a befitting tribute to Veer Surendra Sai and his associates, who laid their lives for the motherland, to have a memorial with a life-size horse-riding statue of Surendra Sai at Asirgarh Fort, his final resting place,” the Minister added.
