Celebrating Diversity and Awareness

Vitiligo Day observed on June 25 each year raises awareness about the skin condition causing loss of skin colour in patches. It's the day to celebrate diversity, promote understanding, and support those affected by vitiligo worldwide, says ARCHANA JYOTI

Radiance Beyond Skin: Celebrating Beauty from Within

Stepping onto the beauty ramp with patches of vitiligo wasn't just about showcasing outer beauty; it was a bold statement of self-acceptance and empowerment. "For years, society's narrow beauty standards made us doubt if we belonged. In a world where narrow beauty standards often exclude diversity, stepping into the spotlight that day was a moment of triumph," these were the sentiments of every vitiligo warrior who participated in a fashion show 'Vitiligo Vikings 3.0' spearheaded by Dr. Nitika Kohil, an ayurvedic dermatologist.

The event held recently in Delhi aimed to empower individuals affected by the skin condition which is often mired with stigma and misconceptions. The event featured a transformative fashion show and talent competition, where participants confidently showcased their unique beauty through ramp walks. Dr. Kohli, Managing Director of Aimil Healthcare and Research Center, emphasized that the event aimed to redefine beauty standards and highlight that beauty transcends skin color. The event also included an exciting lucky draw offering one year of free treatment from Aimil Healthcare, Dr. Kohli informed that Aimil Healthcare & Research Center has successfully treated over 2 lakh patients across 34 cities in India and continues to extend its services globally.

Heat waves AND vitiligo

Individuals living with vitiligo are particularly vulnerable to the effects of heightened temperatures and increased sun exposure, emphasises Medical and Cosmetic Dermatologist  Dr. Atula Gupta. She offers practical tips to help manage and cope with these challenges effectively.

As per Gupta, sun Protection is of paramount importance for individuals with vitiligo. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher should be applied copiously on all exposed areas including those with white patches. Reapplication every 4 hours is crucial. Clothing should cover as much skin as possible and physical protection in the form of umbrellas, sunglasses, and hats should be encouraged. During peak sun hours, it is advisable to seek shade whenever possible.

Avoid consumption of alcohol or excessive caffeine and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. It is crucial to moisturize the white patches on the skin to avoid the risk of irritation from sweat and trauma.

Taking care of your mental and emotional well-being is essential for managing vitiligo. No doubt, from increased psychological stress to the risk of sunburn, peak summer weather poses specific concerns for people with vitiligo. But with proactive measures like emphasising on sun protection, protective skin care, fostering emotional well-being and addressing mental health issues people with vitiligo can enjoy the summer months without impacting their skin condition, says Dr Atula.

WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks melanocytes, cells responsible for producing pigment in the skin, leading to lighter patches and spots. It can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, mouth, nose, and eyes, and may cause premature graying of hair or white streaks in hair. While vitiligo can appear at any age and in people of all races, it often begins in childhood and may run in families.

However, in many cases it is not guaranteed to be inherited. Triggers like severe sunburns or skin injuries can also contribute to its development. Additionally, vitiligo may coincide with other autoimmune conditions or certain cancers.
