After Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Kerala where rains have caused havoc in the past few days, now it’s the turn of the western Madhya Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Gujarat, the Konkan region, Goa, and central Maharashtra to brace for heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department on Sunday issued a red alert for these States.
The most severe category, a red alert, indicates extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm within 24 hours. This poses a significant threat to life and property. Widespread flooding, disruption of essential services, and evacuation orders become likely. In the coming days, heavy rainfall is also expected in Kerala, Coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu while in Maharashtra, a red alert has been issued in Palghar, Pune, and Satara, while an orange alert for very heavy rains has been issued in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Nasik.
IMD scientist, Dr Naresh Kumar said, “Monsoon is in its active phase. There is a deep depression in North East MP. There is low pressure in Southwest Rajasthan. We expect extremely heavy rainfall in western Madhya Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Gujarat, Konkan region, Goa and Central Maharashtra for which we have also issued a red alert. There will be no rain in Delhi-NCR in the next two days.”
He further said that in the coming days, heavy rainfall is expected in Kerala, Coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
“Heavy rainfall is expected in Kerala, Coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in coming days. In north-eastern states, heavy rainfall is expected. When the monsoon trough comes to its near position, light to moderate rainfall is expected in Delhi,” he added.
In recent days, heavy rainfall has led to cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Kerala’s Wayanad where death toll has crossed 350.. Fifteen people have died in Uttarakhand, and 9 deaths with 47 missing in Himachal Pradesh. In these areas, the weather department has issued a heavy rain warning for Sunday.
As per IMD, the monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through Bikaner, Jaipur, Satna, the Centre of Depression over north Jharkhand and the neighbourhood, Bankura, Canning, then southeastwards to the northeast Bay of Bengal.
The weather department has predicted isolated heavy rains over Jammu-Kashmir until August 5 while Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan will face heavy rains until August 10. Similarly, Punjab has been predicted to witness heavy rains on August 4 and 7th.
In North East India, very heavy rains are very likely over Assam, and Meghalaya on August 6th and 7th and Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on August 5th. In addition to this, isolated heavy rains have been predicted over Odisha from August 6 to August 8; Gangetic West Bengal on August 6th, Jharkhand on August 6 and 7; Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya during August 3 to August 10.
In South India, very heavy rains have been predicted over Coastal Karnataka on August 4th while heavy rainfall is very likely over Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu during August 3rd and August 5th.
