Amid considerable delay over the formation of a new government in Maharashtra, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) on Sunday rooted for imposition of the President’s rule in Maharashtra.
The term of the previous Maharashtra Legislative Assembly ended on November 27. It was on that day that Eknath Shinde resigned as the Chief Minister, following which Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan appointed Shinde as the caretaker chief minister.
Upping the ante over the inordinate delay in the formation of a new government in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray and party’s chief spokesperson Sanjay Raut said that the Governor should recommend President’s Rule In Maharashtra.
“It has been 10 days since the MahaYuti got a huge majority in the State Assembly. The BJP itself has a majority, but it has not formed a government yet… What is happening? State BJP President Chandrashekar Bawankule announced that on December 5, the oath-taking ceremony will take place. Is he the Governor?… The Governor should propose the President’s rule here,” Raut said.
Talking to media persons, Raut said: “In Maharashtra, such a government was in power that was wrong as per the Constitution, with the support of the Supreme Court. Former Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Chandrachud is responsible for this”.
Taking to micro-blogging site “X”, Aaditya wrote: ”Presidential rule? Shouldn’t it have been in place by now? Wouldn’t it have been, had the opposition had the numbers, with a decision pending?”
“To not be able to decide on a CM, and form government, for more than a week after the result day, is not just an insult to Maharashtra (for taking our state so lightly) but also to the assistance provided by their dearest Election Commission,” Aaditya said.
“It seems that rules only apply to the opposition parties, while rules don’t for some special ones. To declare the swearing in date, unilaterally, without even staking a claim to form government and show numbers to the Governor, is pure anarchy,” Aaditya wrote.
“And in all this, the caretaker CM is on a mini vacation, as per the phase of the moon, as we’ve regularly observed earlier too. In the meanwhile, Maharashtra seems like no priority for those who could form a government. They’re enjoying their Delhi trips,” Aaditya added, referring to the meeting that Shinde, former deputy chief ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar had with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president J P Nadda a few days back.
