In a joint operation, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh police arrested a 26 year old main sharpshooter in the murder of a gym owner in the national capital, following a brief encounter in Mathura in the early hours of Thursday.
According to the police, Yogesh alias Raju, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Badaun, works for Lawrence Bishnoi and Hashim Baba gangs.
A Delhi Police Special Cell team received a tip-off about Raju's movement in Mathura and a trap was laid along with the local police.
A senior police officer said that he was seen travelling on a motorcycle on the Agra-Mathura Highway service road near Baad railway station around 4 am.
“Specific information was received that Yogesh would come in the jurisdiction of Mathura Refinery between 04:00 am to 05:00 am on Thursday on Apache bike to meet his associate. Consequently, a trap was laid near Agra Mathura Highway Service road, near Baad Railway Station inMathura,” he stated.
The officer added that at about 04:25 am, one person riding on a bike was spotted coming in Agra Mathura Highway Service Road.
“He was asked to stop and surrender by the police team. However, finding himself cornered, he started firing on the police team without any provocation,” he said.
"During the operation, the accused fired 5 rounds at the police team, whereas the raiding team fired 6 rounds in self-defense," another officer said, adding that Raju sustained a gunshot injury in his left leg and has been admitted to the hospital.
Another police officer added that a .32 bore pistol with seven live cartridges, three empty shells and a motorcycle without a number plate were recovered from the spot.
Raju's associate Madhur alias Ayaan was arrested by the Delhi Police Special Cell on October 12. Raju and Madhur allegedly shot dead 35-year-old Nadir Shah outside his gym in Delhi's Greater Kailash 1 on September 12.
Shah also reportedly had ties to Rohit Chaudhary, a gangster who was a rival of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Last month, during investigation, the police also found that the murder was executed on the instructions of Sameer Baba, a close associate of Hashim Baba.
