Graft sullying Bengal's image: Didi

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday candidly conceded that poor services and corruption perpetrated by the Trinamool Congress dispensation had resulted in the party's bad performance in the municipal elections this year.

"We came to power promising good services to the people … but where is that service … I have been told how in many corporations and municipalities the people's representatives, and officials are busy minting money and acquiring big properties by allowing illegal encroachments, illegal construction business," Banerjee said adding, "now time has come when these corrupt people should have some shame because the Government and the State is getting bad name for the actions of some individuals."

The Chief Ministerial reprimand came at a specially convened meeting of the bureaucrats, some ministers, MLAs and municipal chairmen and mayors.

Though the Trinamool Congress has done immensely well in the rural areas the Chief Minister is livid with the party's performance in the urban municipal areas. A micro-analysis of the recently concluded Lok Sabha election results show that though the Trinamool Congress trounced the Opposition winning 29 of Bengal's 42 Lok Sabha seats, Opposition BJP is ahead of the TMC in 67 out of 121 municipalities in the State. In Kolkata Corporation the BJP has taken a lead in 45 out of 144 wards.

"We have spent thousands of crores for the development of the urban areas but what is the result … I have heard how appointments are being made locally and how illegal sanctions are being given in lieu of money … I will ask the SDOs, DMs and ICs (Inspectors in-charge) how much more you will earn … you are stashing away money and giving the state a bad name … now it is time you should feel ashamed of yourself and start working … I will not tolerate this," Banerjee said.

"People go to the civic bodies for services. Most panchayats and municipalities are not working for the people.

Encroachments are being encouraged, illegal buildings allowed. No action is being taken … we have released Rs. 51, 500 crore for urban development since 2011 but still people are not getting service… Garbage vats are overflowing, illegal parking is rampant, no proper roads in the added areas," she said adding however that in most of the cases the BJP men were spoiling their TMC counterparts by luring them into corrupt practices.
