A woman Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Mohana police station in Gajapati district has landed in a soup for allegedly taking bribe and kidnapping a person.
As per allegations, Mohana PS SI Jyotsna Ray had initially taken a bribe of Rs 20,000 from one PreritMajhi of Nudruj village on the pretext of releasing an auto-rickshaw of Samuel Majhi that was seized on the charge of being used for ganja transportation.
Prerit subsequently lodged a complaint on April 25 after Ray had not released the auto-rickshaw. The matter was settled in the presence of the then IIC where the woman Sub-Inspector had returned the Rs 20,000 she had taken as bribe.
“The SI had demanded Rs 50,000 and later I had given Rs 20,000. But my relative’s work was not done as assured. Later, they kidnapped me and forced me to give in writing that the bribe allegation levelled against her was false,” the complainant alleged.
The woman SI was later transferred to the district headquarters in Paralakhemundi after the matter came into the knowledge of the Gajapati Superintendent of Police.
Later, in order to prove that the bribery charge was false, the SI allegedly abducted the complainant with the help of her associates. The complainant was allegedly taken to the Kirama forest and threatened to write an undertaking stating that the bribe demand by Ray was false.
The complainant Majhi somehow managed to escape from the clutches of the abductors and lodged a complaint against the woman SI and three other associates. The matter is now being probed.
A senior officer said, “We have registered a case and further probe is ongoing. Appropriate action will be taken after a detailed investigation.”
