SP Palamu bats for more applications under Domestic Violence Act

Tuesday, 25 April 2023 | M F AHMAD | DALTONGANJ

Palamu police are working on domestic violence act with the same intensity as it deals with land dispute and marital discord matters.
Sources said SP Palamu Chandan Kumar Sinha in his 'Meet the Commoners' programme which he does in his chamber invariably has made a point to propagate the Domestic Violence Act.

He asks his police officers to refer victims of domestic violence to the nearest CDPO with the DI form which is details of incidents and even asks his  police officers to fill the DI form in case the CDPO finds it hard to fill up.

On Monday there came a 20 year old girl from Japla. Her name has been withheld for her dignity. She said she is a Rajput girl and her father died long ago.

She narrated her tale of domestic violence. Her mother beats her up. Her brother too. She said she is not given a single paisa for her medicine if she falls sick. Her torture is that neither her mother nor her brother is any keen to find for her a groom. And she has no liberty to choose her life partner as well. A bizarre case of domestic violence!

Her narrative was no fake. She said what she had undergone. It so moved the SP Palamu Chandan Kumar Sinha who quite silently moved his right hand in his pocket, took out 4 notes of 500 rupees denomination and gave it to the victim of the domestic violence. She said a big thank you to him.

Then SP turned to his police role. He phoned the police officer at Japla (Hussainabad) directing him to go and tell her mother and brother not to torture this girl failing which stern action will be taken.

Explaining the domestic violence act, SP said the victim of domestic violence is entitled to all sorts of legal protection and social empowerment like food, shelter and living with honour.

There is a Magistrate for this who is to do all succour to the victim of the domestic violence within 60 days.

Here it is important to mention that her wife Kanchan Singh, deputy director in the state social welfare department government of Jharkhand Ranchi is training cops and officials as to how to go about cases of domestic violence.

SP said there is a water thin division between 498 A section of the IPC and this domestic violence act. 498A is where a married woman is tortured by her husband and family members of the husband.

In the domestic violence act it is the female inmate again but her status whether married or unmarried is no issue like this girl of Japla who is a victim of domestic violence unleashed by her own mother and brother.
