Punjab Police partners with leading organizations to introduce AI to reduce road fatalities

Saturday, 07 October 2023 | PNS | Chandigarh

Punjab Police’s traffic wing is set to embark on a groundbreaking journey to enhance road safety and traffic management in the state by harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In a significant move, the Punjab Police’s traffic wing has signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with four renowned organizations — Map My India, SAFE Society, Intozi Tech Private Limited (based in Gurugram), and Muskaan Foundation (based in Jaipur).

The significant development precedes the launch of the ambitious Sadak Surakhya Force (SSF) —a specialized police team dedicated to road safety and tackling criminals.

The state’s Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Traffic AS Rai, leading the initiative, expressed his commitment to making Punjab’s roads safer for all citizens. He highlighted that the collaboration with these organizations would employ advanced scientific methods and AI to cultivate a culture of scientific inquiry and knowledge creation. The aim is to enhance road safety strategies and optimize traffic management, revolutionizing how traffic is controlled and accidents are prevented.

ADGP Rai emphasized that this initiative would not only reduce road fatalities and serious injuries but also bolster the state's expertise in various aspects of traffic management, control, transportation, road safety engineering, Intelligent Transport Solutions, m-policing, e-policing, and training within the state police force. It would lead to a deeper understanding of traffic patterns and road safety challenges, ultimately resulting in more effective solutions.

The collaboration between the Punjab Police Traffic Wing and these organizations is expected to facilitate applied research and the dissemination of research findings for the broader benefit of society. It will promote innovation and knowledge-sharing in the field of road safety.

Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre director Dr Navdeep Asija highlighted that this initiative aimed to infuse scientific thinking into road safety efforts and would enhance data-driven decision-making capabilities within the Punjab Police’s traffic wing.

The signatories of the MoUs also pledged their full support for the ‘Decade of Action on Road Safety’ designated by the United Nations from 2021 to 2030. This collaborative effort holds the promise of making Punjab's roads safer, smarter, and more efficient, aligning with global road safety goals.
