NIT Jamshedpur aims to soar in rankings

Friday, 08 September 2023 | PNS | Jamshedpur

In an ambitious move, NIT Jamshedpur, currently ranked at 100, is gearing up to significantly improve its ranking over the next five years. The institution plans to focus on various parameters and bolster its infrastructure, with the aim of becoming a pivotal player in the local economy. These aspirations were voiced by the newly appointed Chairman, Retired IPS and former DGP T. Krishna Prasad, during his visit to NIT Jamshedpur's Adityapur campus.

Prasad shared his comprehensive vision for the development of NIT and emphasized that improving the ranking involves more than just physical infrastructure. He stressed the need to enhance the internal educational infrastructure, including the number of PhD-holding teachers and their areas of expertise. Providing students with opportunities for prosperity is at the core of this endeavor. Prasad expressed confidence in NIT's potential, given its proximity to thousands of industries, prestigious institutions like XLRI, and centers of excellence like NML and Tata.

Speaking about NIT's potential impact on the local community, Chairman T. Krishna Prasad highlighted the possibilities of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and the creation of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) spanning three thousand acres through a well-planned project. NIT is well-positioned to play a pivotal role in such endeavors. Mr. Prasad emphasized the importance of planning projects meticulously, ensuring techno-economic feasibility to avoid disputes and transform the region.

T. Krishna Prasad's journey to becoming the Chairman of NIT is intriguing. He pursued mechanical engineering at NIT Warangal before earning an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. His career took diverse paths, including advertising, before he heeded his father's advice to prepare for the IPS. He passed the IPS exam in his first attempt in 1986. His impressive career in government and administration in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has involved significant contributions to infrastructure development. Notably, he initiated the online FIR facility in Andhra Pradesh in 2012 and played a crucial role in addressing high-profile cases, including the Post Graduate Medical Entrance Paper Leak Scandal during his tenure in CID.

Prasad's leadership at NIT Jamshedpur brings a wealth of experience and vision to the institution, signifying an exciting chapter in its journey towards academic excellence and community development.

Notably, NIT (erstwhile Regional Institute of Technology) is one of the eight regional engineering institutes established in the country in the year 1960. The Institute was fully taken over by the Central Government on April 1, 2003 and renamed National Institute of Technology.
