Man gets Rs 7.90-crore electricity bill!

Monday, 22 May 2023 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

A man of capital Bhubaneswar has the shock of his life with a monthly electricity bill of Rs 7.90 crore.

Durga Prasad Patnaik, who has been served with such an unbelievable amount, stays in a rented accommodation owned by one Ramakanta Mishra at Niladri Vihar. He alleged that he got the bill after the installation of a smart meter in March.

According to Patnaik, he had received a bill of Rs 2,400 in the month of March, Rs 6,000 in April and over Rs 7 crore for the month of May.

“I used to get electricity bills within a range of Rs 700- Rs 1,500. After the installation of the smart meter, I paid a bill of Rs 6,000 in April. I made the payment online and thought the amount included the electricity bill and installation charges. But later, I was shocked when I received a bill of around Rs 7.90 crore for the month of May,” said Patnaik.

Patnaik said that he informed the authorities of the power distribution company TPCODL in a tweet and the organisation rectified the bill on Monday.

"I raised a complaint with the power distribution company by a tweet on the designated digital app (application). Today, I found that my bill has been rectified. Now, my new bill amount, as shown on the app, has been calculated at Rs 4,825. Since I’m an educated person and know the process of lodging complaints on online platforms, I got it rectified. One can well imagine the plight of the people who are ignorant of digital platforms,” said Patnaik.

The concerned power distribution company officials could not be contacted to comment on such a faux pas.
