Half-a-dozen miscreants allegedly abducted and assaulted a Dalit minor girl while trying to rape her in a village in Jaunpur district.
The accused were arrested after the video of the incident went viral on social media.
“All the six accused are from the same village and a case has been registered against them on the complaint of the victim’s mother and they have been arrested,” Jaunpur’s Superintendent of Police (Rural) Shailendra Singh said on Thursday.
The police also said the victim’s mother had identified three of the accused as Sheshmani, Ashish and Gore.
The horrific 30-second video that was widely circulated showed the men beating the young girl in a bid to sexually assault her. The girl could be heard crying and screaming for help.
The victim’s mother alleged that on Monday night, they were sleeping at their home when the accused barged into their house at midnight and forcibly took the girl to a nearby field. The mother also claimed the accused made obscene gestures and used abusive language, including caste-related slurs.
The police arrested the accused Ashish, Vicky, Gore, Pramod, Pappu, and Seshamani. Superintendent of Police Ajay Pal Sharma and Superintendent of Police (Rural) Shailendra Singh gave instructions to take strict action against the accused.
