In a shocking incident, a Punjab Police Assistant Inspector-General of Police (ASI) killed his wife, son, and pet dog with his service revolver in Bhumli village of Gurdaspur district, before shooting himself.
As per the initial investigations, family strife is believed to be the reason behind the incident.
ASI Bhupinder Singh, posted in Amritsar, allegedly killed his wife Baljit Kaur (40) and son Lovepreet Singh (19) with his service weapon. He also shot his pet dog and fled, the police said. Hours later, the cop shot himself. Gurdaspur Police has sent the bodies for postmortem.
The accused even kidnapped a teenage girl, said to be his neighbour, who reportedly saw him committing the crime. As per reports, ASI took the girl to a house in Shahpur Jajjan village in Dera Baba Nanak police station, 35 km away from Bhumli, in his car, and allegedly threatens to murder her.
Senior officers of Gurdaspur and Batala police districts have reached Shahpur Jajjan, and persuaded upon the cop, following which they succeeded in rescuing the girl safely. But the cop refuses to surrender. Seeing himself surrounded by the police, the ASI eventually shot himself as well. He was taken to the hospital in an unconscious condition.
