The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will undertake a door-to-door campaign before holding a rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on June 11 to mobilise public opinion against the ordinance issued last week to restore to the Union Government the power over “services” in the national Capital.
AAP’s Delhi convener, Gopal Rai, said the door to door campaign will run parallel to the party’s efforts to defeat the ordinance when it is presented for approval in Rajya Sabha. “On June 11, the people of Delhi will gather for a ‘maha rally’ at Ramlila Maidan against this ordinance,” he said. He also appealed to people to join the rally at Ramlila Maidan.
“The BJP has a majority in Lok Sabha. The chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has said that we will contact all opposition parties to defeat the bill in Rajya Sabha. This ordinance shows that the Centre will impose “dictatorial decisions” like this on the country, Rai said at a press conference.
“This black ordinance has made it clear that the BJP-led Centre will impose dictatorial decisions like this on the country. Therefore, the AAP has decided to launch a campaign against it along with the people of Delhi.
“The AAP firmly believes that such measures undermine the principles of democracy and infringe upon the rights and powers of the people. He also raised concerns over the current support extended by the Congress Party to an encroachment upon the powers vested in the people,” Rai said.
Rai expressing his anger said, “The people of Delhi have been fighting since Madanlal Khurana’s time to make Delhi a full-fledged state. Now the BJP says that they will not let Delhi remain half or even a quarter of the state it is supposed to be. Now all the decisions of Delhi will be taken by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. The black Ordinance brought by the BJP proves that Prime Minister Modi is bent on dictatorship.”
