Two persons, including a woman, sustained critical injuries when the vehicle by which they were travelling veered off the road and fell into the Taladanda Canal in Cuttack city on Monday. The incident took place on the Matrubhaban-Nayabazar road.
The male occupant of the car is currently in a critical condition while both injured have been shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital.
Prompt action was taken by a team comprising local residents, firefighters and police officers, who successfully rescued both individuals from the submerged vehicle.
An eyewitness at the scene commented, “The absence of safety barricades, despite ongoing construction work, led to the car plunging into the canal.”
Expressing concern over the incident, former MLA Prabhat Ranjan Biswal remarked, “I will urge the local MLA to arrange a meeting of the Collector, CMC, Drainage Division, JICA and Irrigation Department to implement appropriate measures to prevent such incidents in future.”
