Special Judge, OPID (Odisha Protection of Interest of Depositors) Court Biswajit Das on Thursday convicted two officials of a ponzi firm, ‘ Miracle Wonder Sales & Marketing‘, and awarded three years’ RI with Rs 1.51-lakh penalty to each of them. The court further directed for another 23 months’ jail term if they failed to pay the penalty amount.
The convicts were identified Mamamta Dey, a resident of Baliapal, and Laxminkanta Maharana of Remuna working as director and marketing manager, respectively, for the multilevel marketing company.
They were apprehended by the Sahadevkhunta police on the complaint of a depositor, Ratnaprava Das. She in her FIR with police had alleged that she was duped by the chit fund company to the tune of Rs 9 lakh in the pretext of high returns and other attractive incentives. She was even issued bonds against her deposits to gain her faith. Afterwards, she found the company’s office at FM Circle here closed and no trace of the officials.
The accused duo had been tried under the IPC, the PCMC (Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act and the OPID law. The court announced the verdict after examining six witnesses and 28 exhibits, said Special Public Prosecutor Pranab Panda.
