Approximately 65 million people worldwide are affected by epilepsy. Individuals of any age can be afflicted by epilepsy, with various factors such as genetics, brain injury, infection, or developmental issues being potential causes.
Abnormal activities in the brain lead to the condition of epilepsy. This condition affects the person's routine activities and social image. In such cases, awareness and understanding of its diagnosis are crucial.
Dr Bikash Kumar Mishra, a neurologist from the Neuro Care Center, emphasized the use of medication that is safe and effective for treatment, considering the types of epilepsy.
In most patients, seizures can be controlled with medication, but in cases where medication is ineffective, surgical intervention can be considered.
Furthermore, Dr Mishra underscored that epilepsy can be managed through lifestyle changes. Such changes also have a positive impact on overall health. In fact, incorporating practices such as getting adequate sleep, practicing mindfulness, engaging in respiratory exercises for stress management, etc., into one's routine can be beneficial. Even when sleep is incomplete, seizures can occur, he said.
Regular physical activity can help prevent seizures by keeping the body engaged. Exercise also contributes to mental well-being. Alongside this, maintaining a balanced diet and staying hydrated stabilizes brain function.
In addition to adhering to all these practices, it's essential to follow the doctor's prescribed medications for appropriate epilepsy management and seek regular advice from them, Dr Mishra advised.
