Jain collapses in Tihar, put on oxygen support

Friday, 26 May 2023 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Jailed AAP leader and former Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain has been put on oxygen support and shifted to the Lok Nayak Jayaprakash (LNJP) Hospital due to breathing problems on Thursday.

He was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhaya Hospital after he collapsed in a bathroom of the Tihar Jail due to dizziness around 6 am on Thursday.

Earlier too Jain had fallen in the bathroom and had a serious spinal injury, the AAP said. Jain, lodged in connection with a money-laundering case in May last year, will undergo all necessary tests as a precautionary measure.

According to AAP sources, Jain has been shifted to an ICU at the LNJP Hospital and he was “critically ill”.

The LNJP Hospital is the largest hospital under the Delhi government. He (Jain) was brought to the emergency department of the LNJP Hospital earlier in the day and doctors examined him, a senior doctor at the city government-run hospital said on the condition of anonymity.

Taking to Twitter, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, hours after his colleague Jain was collapsed in Tihar Jail  saying “a dictator is bent on killing that good person”.

“The dictator is hell bent on killing the man who was working day and night to provide good treatment and good health to the public. The dictator has only one principle - he wants to finish everyone, he believes only in his own ego. He cannot see beyond himself,”  Kejriwal tweeted.

The Chief Minister further wrote “God is watching all of this, he will do justice when time comes. I pray to God for Jain’s speedy recovery.  May God give him the strength to fight against these adverse circumstances.”

In a statement, the AAP said Jain’s condition had deteriorated after a debilitating injury from a fall in the jail washroom last week, which resulted in a spinal injury leaving him in excruciating pain. The gravity of the situation demands an immediate spinal surgery, as recommended by his attending doctors.

“A closer examination of Jain’s medical condition reveals a troubling array of ailments. He suffers from acute lumbar pain, causing vertigo and chronic lower back pain due to a slipped disc. The pain radiates throughout his lower limbs, leaving him with a constant tingling sensation and decreased mobility,” it said.

The AAP claimed that Jain has become extremely weak and finds it difficult to walk.

“Due to his religious beliefs, Jain has been living only on fruits and raw vegetables in jail. Suffering from severe muscular loss. Jain has lost 35 kgs while in prison,” the party said.

“Suffering from sleep apnea, he sleeps at night with the assistance of a BiPAP machine which continuously pushes air into his lungs,” the party added.

A senior jail official said around 6 am on Thursday, under-trial prisoner Jain slipped in the bathroom of the MI room of the hospital of central jail number-7, where he was kept under observation for general weakness.

He was examined by doctors and his vitals were found normal. Jain was referred to the DDU Hospital as he complained of pain in his back, left leg and shoulder, the official said.

On Monday, Jain was taken to the Safdarjung Hospital as he was feeling unwell.
