Hit & drag: Anjali’s friend Nidhi was arrested in drug case in 2020

In fresh revelations on Saturday it has now emerged that Nidhi, the eyewitness in the Anjali Singh hit and drag case and her so-called “friend”, was arrested in December 2020 in a case of smuggling of drugs registered in Agra Cantonment.

A video and a hospital report also did the rounds purportedly showing that Anjali had met with an accident six months earlier as well.

According to police sources, Nidhi had been intercepted and arrested on December 6, 2020, at the Agra railway station under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, (1985) for bringing 30 kg ganja (drugs) by train from Telangana. She was subsequently placed under arrest. Two boys named Sameer and Ravi were also arrested along with Nidhi. She is currently on bail. Police have denied reports that Nidhi was arrested in the Sultanpuri death case and said she was only called to join the investigation.

Regarding Anjali, a fresh CCTV footage doing the rounds purportedly shows how she met with an accident while driving her scooter on the night of July 16, 2022. In the video, Anjali can be seen driving the scooter at high speed before crashing into a pile of tyres by the roadside. The impact is such that Anjali is catapulted off her two-wheeler and slammed onto the road, while the scooter flips over in the air. Other commuters get off their vehicles and rush to help the young woman lying prone on the ground.

Anjali sustained serious injuries in the accident and was hospitalised. Medical tests during that time revealed that she had been under the influence of alcohol, as per sources. The report from Guru Gobind Singh Government Hospital has been accessed by the Delhi Police probing the case.

Anjali was killed after being hit and dragged by a car for 12 km from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala in outer Delhi on New Year.

Her friend, Nidhi, who was riding pillion on her scooter at the time of the accident, has claimed she fell to the side and fled the spot after the accident because she was “scared”. She had also claimed that Anjali had gone to meet her friends at a hotel on December 31 night.

“She was drunk and even fought with me. We left the hotel at around 1.45 am (Sunday) and she wanted to drive the scooter but I insisted that I will drive. We left and initially I rode the two-wheeler but she threatened to jump from the vehicle if I did not allow her to ride. She kept saying, ‘It is my scooter, and I will drive’,” Nidhi had claimed

Anjali’s mother has termed the accident as a “well-thought-out conspiracy” and has demanded the accused be given strict punishment. “Nidhi is saying all the wrong things. If Nidhi was my daughter’s friend, then how did she leave her alone? This is a well-thought-out conspiracy. Nidhi might be involved in this. There should be an investigation and the five men should be punished,” Rekha, Anjali’s mother, said.

Meanwhile a city court on Saturday granted bail to Ankush Khanna who allegedly shielded the accused involved in the Kanjhawala accident case. Metropolitan Magistrate Sanya Dalal granted the relief to Khanna, who had surrendered on Friday, after observing that the charges against him were bailable.

The judge noted that according to the Investigating Officer (IO), Khanna had in his statement to the police said that accused Deepak was driving the vehicle. However, according to the investigation conducted so far, it has been found that accused Amit was driving. During the proceedings, the prosecution sought 14 days of judicial custody of the accused.

Delhi police has arrested six persons and one has surrendered in this case. The Delhi Government has sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the family of Anjali.
