For the first time since 1965, the water level in Yamuna dipped to the lowest 666.80 feet against the normal level of 674.50 ft, leading to shortage of water supply in most parts of the national Capital. The water supply will be available with low pressure. According to the Delhi Jal Board, due to less receipt of raw water in Delhi Sub Branch (DSB), Carrier Line Channel (CLC) and reduction of pond level at 666.80 ft against the normal level of 674.50 ft in River Yamuna at Wazirabad, the water production has been affected adversely in Chandrawal and Wazirabad Water Treatment Plants. “The DJB has done rationalization of water in whole city. Therefore, water supply will be available at low pressure in the morning and evening of July 30 and so on till the sufficient water is released by Haryana in DSB, CLC and in River Yamuna,” said a senior DJB official.
“The areas likely to be affected are Civil lines, Hindu Rao Hospital and adjoining areas including KamlaNagar, ShaktiNagar and adjoining areas of KarolBagh, Pahar Ganj, NDMC areas, Old and New Rajinder Nagar, Patel Nagar (East & West), Baljeet Nagar, Prem Nagar, Inderpuri Kalkaji, Govindpuri, Tugalkabad, Sangam Vihar, Ambedkar Nagar. Prahladpur, Ramleela Ground, Delhi gate, Subhash Park, Model Town, Gulabi Bagh, PunjabiBagh, Jahangirpuri,Moolchand, South Extension, Greater kailash, Burari and parts of Cantonment areas and South Delhi,” said the DJB in a statement issued on Wednesday.
“Therefore, public is advised to make judicious use of water and water tankers shall be available on demand,” the statement added.
Earlier, this month DJB’s Vice Chairman Saurabh Bhardwaj had expressed concern over the Yamuna’s dipping water levels. He had urged the Haryana government again to release more water into river to get a proper water supply.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had also asked Haryana government to release water in the Yamuna. “The water level of Yamuna is continuously decreasing. I request the Haryana Government to cooperate. I will request the L-G also to ask the Haryana government to do the same,” Kejriwal had said.
