Strap: Former students set an example in volunteerism

Saturday, 30 April 2022 | Parvinder Bhatia | Jamshedpur

A heart set in the right place is work done right. This saying fits best for all the former students of Loyola School who step out every day of their world to make a difference in others.

In a cruel heat wave condition prevailing in Jamshedpur, the alumni of Loyola School can be seen sweating hard to manage traffic near the school campus to ensure hassle free entry of school students and easy drop in for parents and van operators.

With an aim to ensure better traffic management and create awareness about rules and regulations, the former students under the banner of Loyola Alumni Association (LAA) are engaged in managing traffic near the school gates.

Iqbal Alam, traffic in-charge of Loyola Alumni Association said that the association started this noble activity, LAA Traffic Control from 2018 and it is going on with overwhelming response.

“Initially we had few volunteers managing huge traffic, now we have 25 dedicated volunteers doing traffic control. Our main motto is safety of children and managing traffic. This noble activity is being done only in Loyola School by the Loyola Alumni Association. We have received great support from our Principal Father Pius Fernandes without his support it would not be possible. While doing traffic it is mandatory to wear Red Sash. The volunteers feel proud wearing the school’s sash.

Principal Father Pius Fernandes said that he is proud of the alumni of Loyola School for their role in managing traffic every day. The amazing part of the service is that there are some devotees who despite keeping fast are giving their time in managing traffic outside under the scorching sun. He said the children and parents feel safe now.

Alam observed that some people often get frustrated when they are asked to obey the traffic laws. As a result, they simply changed the narrative. Instead of enforcing the rules, they started thanking all those who followed the rules. This has helped the school campus gates free of traffic snarls.

Rajiv Talwar, president and Savak Patel, secretary of Loyola Alumni Association said that the trend of volunteering in the streets has encouraged others to join in. Several former students look forward to lending their hands in this noble initiative. The parents also obey their instructions and follow the traffic rules.
