Wednesday, 30 November 2022 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

As against Rs 66.98 crore spent by the Odisha Government to host the Hockey World Cup in 2018, this time it would spend 16 times more, that is, Rs 1,098.40 crore for organising the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup in January 2023.

Notably, this time, the Hockey WC would be organised at Bhubaneswar and Rourkela though last time, the tourney was held only in Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga stadium. The newly constructed Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium for which the State Government has spent Rs 1,010 crore out of the total outlay of Rs 1,098 crore, is all set for the international event.

While Rs 875.78 crore was invested in building of the new stadium at Rourkela, which is at final stage of construction, Rs 84 crore was spent on construction of accommodation buildings, Rs 10.50 crore earmarked for peripheral development work in Rourkela and Rs 13 crore for electrical works in the stadium.

Rs 17.50 crore has been given to the Hockey India for putting the synthetic turfs in both Rourkela and Bhubaneswar stadiums. The Government will also spend Rs 75 crore on venue management, accommodation, transportation and media publicity, said sources. Besides, Rs 9.15 crore will be spent on development of a swimming pool in Rourkela, Rs 5.39 crore for installing flood light in Kalinga stadium and Rs 8 crore in extension of west stand of the stadium. Out of Rs 66.98 crore it spent in 2018 Hockey WC, Rs 25 crore was deposited as presenting partner rights fee to the Hockey India/FIH (International Hockey Federation). Only Rs 18.89 crore was spent on venue and event management. Transportation, accommodation, publicity and others accounted for the rest of the amount.
