Moosewala's father seeks probe by sitting high court judge into son's killing

Tuesday, 31 May 2022 | PNS | Chandigarh

The father of slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala on Monday urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to order a probe by a sitting judge of the high court into the killing of his son, a demand which was met soon after. Seeking justice for his son, Moosewalas father Balkaur Singh demanded that the Punjab government should involve the CBI and the NIA in the inquiry. He also demanded a public apology from the DGP for linking his sons murder to gangwar.

In a letter to CM Mann, Singh blamed the AAP government's alleged incompetency for the incident.  "Shubhdeep's mother is asking me where her son is and when he will return. What reply should I give?" said Singh in an emotional letter. "I hope that I will get justice," he added.

"This case should be inquired by a sitting judge of the high court. The Punjab government should ensure assistance of the CBI and the NIA in the inquiry," Singh wrote in the letter. He demanded that the accountability of officers, who reviewed his son's security and made public the order of withdrawal of the security cover, be fixed.

VILLAGERS PROTEST OUTSIDE MANSA CIVIL HOSPITAL

A protest was held on Monday outside the Mansa civil hospital, where Sidhu Moosewala's body has been kept for post-mortem, demanding action against those responsible for the Punjabi singer's killing.  The protesters, who were mostly villagers of the area, also raised slogans against the AAP government in the state for curtailing his security cover. Several markets in Mansa remained shut on Monday.

Inspector-General of Police Pradeep Yadav and other officials visited the residence of the singer to talk to his family members about the post-mortem.   Heavy security has been deployed by the police outside the civil hospital and barricades have also been put up.  A protester said, ''We are demanding action against those who were behind the murder of Sidhu Moosewala.''

Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, former deputy chief minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, and some other Congress leaders reached the residence of Moosewala in Mansa and condoled his death. A large number of supporters and villagers also gathered at his residence.

Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered over the killing of Moosewala over the complaint of his father Balkaur Singh. At least three weapons including one of 9 mm caliber were used and 30 empty cases were recovered from the site.  Leaders of Congress and other political parties expressed shock and anger over the killing and blamed the AAP government for the incident. A three-member Special Investigation Team has already been set up to probe the killing.
